EDITORIAL-2011 Polls: Who the Cap Fits…
Now that a new Chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been appointed, it therefore means that arrangement for next year’s general elections is gradually gathering momentum.
Again, in a matter of weeks or so, political parties are putting finishing touches preparatory for their primary elections mainly for presidential and gubernatorial candidates the states of the Federation.
Against this back drop, therefore, Century Newsfront Newspaper opines that the political parties should from the beginning put up only those candidates with proven integrity that is men of honour and not those who feel that honour rests in the number of flashy Cars or the amount of money they acquire while in office to make them dump such monies in foreign backs thus forgetting about those who voted them into power.
For the sake of these and more, we suggest in line with what the Reggae Maestro, Bob Marley said in his piece “Who the cap fits, let him wear”. That is to say give honour to whom honour is due and mostly Christ Himself did say that open ought not to give to the dogs, those good things due for the children –“the electorates in this circumstance.
In the past, this had been the case whereby Nigerian electorates for almost fifty years of the country’s nationhood still live in penury, and every decade, developing nation, whereas the resources of this country including human are such that could make us develop like other developed nations of the world.
Again, as a new blood had been injected into the INEC, it must first of all see to it that it lives above board by ensuring that nobody influences it, afteral as the name implies, it must be independent in accordance with such name.
Since a greater part of the electorates had been brain washed with money, so what the new INEC must do now is to embark on serious enlightenment of the electorates down to the grassroots including the consequences on any electoral malpractice.
Finally, it must not toy the line of most politicians nor that of past commissions, letting transparency to be its watch word and for the electorates to really feel and see it too for if this is done successfully, the country too will succeed.
The electorates for sure should know that they too with the country have come of age which means that at least they can distinguish between left and right, right and wrong.
