A’Ibom NUJ Condemns Yellow Journalism

The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ) has condemned in strong terms the indiscriminate emergence of all sorts of tabloid and folded sheets on the news stands across the State.

In a statement signed by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Ephraim Etti, the Union said though it was not opposed to freedom of expression as entrenched in the 1999 constitution, it was sad to note that in spite of earlier warnings and education, some Publishers and people who find journalism as an all-covers affair still go on with yellow journalism unabated.

The statement which expressed displeasure over the way and manner owners of some of these Newspapers go on blackmailing some top government officials thereby causing disaffection in governance warned that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

It warned publishers of such papers to desist forthwith from the practice and implored genuine journalists in such employ to withdraw their services from questionable publishers that are likely to lead them to disastrous end.
